Professor of Africana Studies Heather Merrill’s Africa in Diaspora class along with other Africana studies concentrators and students traveled to the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. on Feb. 11.

Professor of Philosophy Todd Franklin said the Africana Studies department added a field trip component to the classes in an effort to foster a greater understanding of African diasporic lives and experiences.

Students and faculty spent the day exploring the finest collection of artifacts and curated exhibitions pertaining to the customs, creations, experiences, and accomplishments of African-descended peoples. The new Smithsonian Museum opened in September.
