Alejandro Portes, Howard Harrison and Gabrielle Snyder Beck Professor of Sociology and director of the Center for Migration and Development at Princeton University, will present, "The Second Generation and the Future of American Society," on Wednesday, January 29, at 8 p.m. in the Hamilton College Chapel. 

Portes was born in Cuba and came to the United States in 1960.  His research focuses on the adaptation process of the immigrant second generation and the rise of transnational immigrant communities in this country.  His most recent books include "Legacies: The Story of the Immigrant Second Generation" and "Ethnicities: Children of Immigrants in America," both co-authored with Ruben G. Rumbaut.  Portes is the past president of the American Sociological Association and is a former fellow of the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral sciences and of the Russell Sage Foundation.

This program is sponsored by the Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center and is the first in the spring series focused on immigration and global citizenry.  Other programs include a presentation by Deborah Anker, a Harvard professor and expert on refugee law, on February 11 and one on April 24 by University of Maryland professor Gary Gerstle who is the author of "American Crucible" and "Working-Class Americanism."
