Alex Matthiessen, executive director of environmental group Riverkeeper, will give a lecture, "The Truth about Our Nuclear Neighbor:  Indian Point and the Hudson River," on Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fillius Events Barn. The lecture is part of The Kirkland Project for the Study of Gender, Society and Culture series, "Technology, Science, and Democracy:  What's at Stake?"

Riverkeeper is an active environment group whose mission is to safeguard the ecological integrity of the Hudson River, its tributaries and the watershed of New York City (protecting the city's drinking water supply).  Riverkeeper surveys the current environmental issues the region faces and practical ways in which people can use science, conservation, and the law to ensure the protection of local ecosystems.  Since 1983, Riverkeeper has investigated and brought to justice more than 300 environmental lawbreakers.

Co-sponsors of this lecture are the department of biology and the program in environmental studies.  The lecture is free and open to the public.  For more information, please contact the Kirkland Project at 315-859-4288.
