Assistant Professor of Religious Studies Abhishek Amar recently presented a paper titled “Heritage and History-Making in Gaya Region” at the Heritage in Context: Balancing the Global with the Local conference in New Delhi, India. Questioning the UNESCO world heritage site model of preservation, Amar demonstrated the existing models of site and sculptural preservation prevalent in the Gaya region of India.
The conference was organized jointly by LMU, Munich, Nalanda University, Rajgir and India International Center, Delhi.
He also published an article in an edited volume titled Bodhgaya: Impressions within and Beyond. Amar's article examines the relationships between fractal polities and Buddhist institutions of early medieval India to study issues of patronage and religious transmission.
