Assistant Professor of Religious Studies Abhishek Amar presented a paper titled “Islamic State and Buddhist Monasteries in the Thirteenth Century Magadha” at a symposium on Buddhist and Muslim Encounters in Pre-modern South Asia, which was organized by the University of Lausanne, Switzerland.
Amar's paper questioned the text-based explanations of the Islamic destruction of Buddhist monastic sites by specifically looking at the archaeological history of monastic sites in the Magadha/South Bihar region in the 13th century and emphasized the utility of micro-history approach for the study of this theme.
