Ambrose's talk was part of an an NEH-Sponsored Faculty Development Initiative, “From Inquiry to Innovation.” The initiative is "a one-year, interdisciplinary, multi-campus initiative that will bring together faculty participants from across the City University of New York system. Its goal is to promote the study of the humanities through workshops and seminars centered on the theme of 'conflict and dialogue.'"
In addition to his talk, Ambrose also conducted a workshop with the faculty participants that focused on "conflict and dialogue" in the antebellum U.S. and how to use primary sources to help students understand historical worldviews that often differ fundamentally from their own.
