Michael "Doc" Woods
Hamilton College Professor of Music Michael "Doc" Woods brings together some of the area's best jazz artists for the annual Jazz Kick-Off event on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 8 p.m. in the Fillius Events Barn.

Titled "E=mc2: The Theory of Funkativity" the concert will present a blend of African-American popular music, jazz and modern concepts of improvisation. Don't miss some of the best jazz artists from Syracuse and Utica including Jeff Stockham, trumpet; Angelo Candela, trombone; Bob Cesari, saxophone; Rick Compton, drums; Tom Witowski, piano; Estine Smith, vocals; Jason Smith, keyboard, and Woods, bass. Woods' son Christopher will also perform on bass with his father for the first time.

Woods is the director of Jazz Studies at Hamilton College. He has written more than 500 pieces in all styles and his compositions have been performed by the Albany Symphony, the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, the Little Rock Symphony, the Tulsa Philharmonic, the Central New York Jazz Orchestra, and the Salt City Jazz Collective.
