Volunteers from Make a Difference Day 2006.
Make a Difference Day, Hamilton's annual community service day, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 1, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Campus service organization HAVOC, the sponsor of the event, hopes to have 200 students and staff members volunteer at about a dozen community organizations in Utica. This annual event is aimed at getting students off campus and into the nearby neighborhoods with need.

Emily Pallin '08, who heads HAVOC noted, "Every year I'm inspired by the amount of students willing to contribute their Saturday to help others. This year looks like it will be our biggest turnout yet."

Volunteers will be engaged in a variety of projects including painting, cleaning, and cooking and serving meals at a food pantry. It's an event that HAVOC, and its partners in Utica, look forward to every year. One organization specifically requested the rugby team members who had made such a difference at last year's event. Make a Difference Day fosters a strong sense of community both on the Hill and between Hamilton and Utica. Among this year's sites are Emmaus House, United Cerebral Palsy, New Horizons and the Children's Museum.

Registration is at 10:30 on Saturday, Sept. 1 in the Events Barn, followed by breakfast; then volunteers will be bused to their volunteer sites, where they will work until 4 p.m.  They'll be bused back to campus for a time of reflection and a barbecue dinner.
