The Hamilton College (7-11, 2-3 NESCAC) baseball team defeated Middlebury College (5-11, 1-4 NESCAC), 7-2 on Friday afternoon in NESCAC action at Royce Field. Matt Marsallo (Syracuse, NY) pitched a gem for the Continentals as he went 8+ innings allowing three earned runs on three Middlebury hits. He struck out six and walked three.
Middlebury took an early lead when Gil Kim (Pottsville, PA) scored on an a sacrifice by John Prescott (Sierra Madra, CA) in the top of the first inning off Marsallo. Hamilton took the lead in the bottom of the third, plating two runs. Brian Farnkoff (Boston, MA) reached on an error. Two batters later Brett Zalaski (Simsbury, CT) reached base on a single to left. Semmie Taylor (Delray Beach, FL) drove them in with a double to left, giving Hamilton a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth Mike Murphy (Syracuse, NY) led off the inning with a line shot that hit off the screen in left, just barely missing a home run. Two batters later Matt Goossen (Hong Kong), who went 3-4 with two RBI, doubled to right, scoring Murphy from second. Goossen would later score on a wild pitch as the Continentals broke the game open.
Hamilton tallied a run in the fifth when Goossen plated Mike Murphy with a single to left. Both teams traded runs in the sixth inning and Middlebury tallied a run in the ninth, making it 7-3 Hamilton.
Matt Goossen led Hamilton, going 3-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Brett Zalaski and Charles Spiliotis (Topsfield, MA) each went 2-5, while Semmie Taylor drove in two runs. Gil Kim led Middlebury as he went 3-5 with a runs scored and a double.
