Brian Alward '04 was featured in the Bergen Record article about his planned 3,000-mile bicycle trip from New Jersey to California, to raise money for cancer research. Inspired by his father's recent diagnosis and treatment for prostate cancer, Alward started a non-profit organization, 2004 Coast to Coast for Hope, to help raise funds. According to the article: "He sent letters to family members and friends requesting help and donations, or pledges for miles cycled. He also applied for a grant from his fraternity, Delta Kappa Epsilon. So far, his organization has raised more than $6,000." Alward's father is currently recovering from therapy and has been cancer-free for several months.

According to the Record article: "Three friends from Hamilton College eventually agreed to ride with Alward. Ryan Burke, a buddy from Maine, and Cameron Feist, a friend from Florida, said they would cycle part of the trip. Burke would do it to raise money for lung cancer and awareness about the dangers of smoking. Feist decided to ride in honor of his grandfather, who struggled with bone cancer and skin cancer before passing away last winter from a heart attack."
