The Brookings Institution has announced the appointment of Hamilton College government professor Cheng Li as Nonresident Senior Fellow for the year 2005-06.  Li, the William R. Kenan Professor of Government, is part of the Brookings Institution's China Initiative, a group of scholars who develop timely, independent analysis and policy recommendations to help U.S. and Chinese leaders address key long-term challenges, both in terms of U.S.-China relations and China's internal development.

The China Initiative began its public work on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at the institution at a day-long program titled "China's Emergence." The program included a series of panel discussions on China's emergence. Panelists included Donald Evans, former secretary of commerce; Samuel Berger, former national security advisor; Carla Hills, former U.S. trade representative; Kishore Mahbubani, former permanent secretary for the Singapore Foreign Ministry; Fred Hu, chairman of Goldman Sachs China; and J. Stapleton Roy, former U.S. ambassador to China. Li was also a contributor to the day's program and was interviewed for a live broadcast by the BBC as well as by print journalists including representatives from The Washington Post.

The China Initiative serves as a home for scholarship, programs and public policy discussion on China, focusing on areas in which China has special problems and Brookings has special expertise. These areas include energy security, political and economic reform, urban development, public health and developing better understanding between the elites and ordinary people in China and between China and the rest of the world. The Initiative will explore the dynamics of China's transformation and emergence as a political and economic power and the implications for the United States, China, the East Asian region, and the world. Brooking will also continue to focus on key issues that are the subject of ongoing research, including China's important regional and global security interests.
