Butts is a Summer Sizzle in Chemistry Department at Hamilton

seeks to understand the calcium binding behavior of the antibiotic tetracycline.  His faculty advisor is Hamilton Professor of Chemistry Tim Elgren.

 Butts, a graduate of Central Bucks East High School and currently a double major in chemistry and economics at Hamilton, will work with a state-of-the-art instrument that measures the heat given off during a reaction.  It is so sensitive that it can detect heat given off when salt dissolves in water.  By measuring heat, Butts will compare the calcium binding strengths for a variety of structurally altered tetracyclines.
