Associate Professor of Africana Studies Nigel Westmaas recently gave the keynote address at an event commemorating the first anniversary of the launch of the Buxton-Friendship Museum, Archive and Culture Center in Guyana. The celebration took place in Laurel, Md., and also recognized Guyanese in the diaspora and in the homeland who assisted in making the museum a reality.
Buxton-Friendship is a historic village in Guyana that was purchased by its formerly enslaved citizens in 1841. Westmaas has donated historical newspaper pieces about the village from his Guyana archive to the museum.
