Professor of French and Cinema and Media Studies Martine Guyot-Bender curated a program of Cambodian films at the 28th Maine International Film Festival in Waterville, Maine. The selection featured five works from Cambodia’s emerging New Wave, ranging from shorts to feature-length films.

Filmmaker and producer Kavich Neang traveled from Cambodia to present his acclaimed film Last Night I Saw You Smiling (2019). The documentary captures the expropriation and demolition of Phnom Penh’s iconic White Building—once home to 500 families and a place where Neang himself grew up. The teardown, part of a massive urbanization project, marked the end of an era. Neang is also the co-founder, with filmmaker Davy Chou, of Anti-Archive, a production company dedicated to supporting Cambodia’s new generation of art-house cinema.
