Hamilton College will commemorate Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday with a number of campus and community events in January.

On Monday, Jan. 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., a group of Hamilton employees will participate in Employee Community Service Day at various sites around greater Utica, including Hope House. The college has given release time to employees who are participating.

Later that day a commemorative celebration reception featuring Michael "Doc" Woods will take place from 4-5:45 p.m. in the Tolles Pavilion (Annex). It will include an "open mic" period where individuals can reflect on what "the man" and "the day" mean to them. Employees who participate in the Employee Community Service Day will be invited to reflect on their experiences.

The play The Meeting, by Jeff Stetson, will be staged on Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 21 and 22. It is directed by Mark Cryer of Hamilton's Theatre Department and will begin at 7 p.m. following a 6 p.m. dinner in the Fillius Events Barn. Admission to the play is free, and the dinner is free for Hamilton students, faculty and staff.  Due to limited seating reservations are strongly suggested. To make reservations call 315-859-4057.

A two-person drama, The Meeting depicts the imagined meeting of two of the most important men of modern times: Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Meeting takes place in a Harlem hotel on Valentines Day, 1965, before they were assassinated, just three years apart. Portrayed as a dialogue, the two men debate their various approaches to the same social problems by exploring their different philosophies.

Hamilton's 10th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Day will take place on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 10:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Hamilton students and employees will perform volunteer work at various sites throughout Greater Utica, including Loretto, Red Cross – Utica, Emmaus House, Thea Bowman and the Boys & Girls Club.

On Sunday, Jan. 27, at 11 a.m., a special Worship Service will be held in Hamilton's Chapel.
