Assistant Professor of Biology Wei-Jen Chang co-authored a paper titled "The pathway to detangle scrambled genes" in the journal PLoS ONE. This interdisciplinary, collaborative research attempted to decipher pathways for piecing correct DNA segments together in protozoan ciliates.
Mechanisms responsible for recognizing correct DNA segments appear to be complicated, but follow a general rule that less complicated segments being sewn first and more difficult regions being dealt later in a trial and error fashion. This work was one of a few research made toward understanding a complicated yet acrobatic process that has been known for more than 20 years.
