As a chemistry major at Hamilton, Christy House '06 (West Winfield, NY) has had little time to pursue one of her other true passions: art. As a recipient of a summer research grant, House will put down the test tube and pick up some clay to create her Emerson-funded art project.
House will be working with Hamilton College Professor Robert Palusky to create a project that will portray the role of women in Iraqi society versus the role of women in the United States. House will study the societal portrayal of Iraqi women and use her artistic skills to create clay and building figures of the women and their environment. House states that "the focal point of the project will be how the expectations of society limit women from personal expression;" she plans to create a project that will "represent the boundaries of personal expression created by both societies." The figurines will be on display during the 2004-2005 academic year in the List Art Center at Hamilton College.
Summer Research 2004 |
Created in 1997, the Emerson Foundation Grant program was designed to provide students with significant opportunities to work collaboratively with faculty members, researching an area of interest. The recipients, covering a range of topics, will explore fieldwork, laboratory and library research, and the development of teaching materials. The projects will be initiated this summer, and the students will make public presentations of their research throughout the 2004-2005 academic year.
