Assistant Professor of Anthropology Haeng-ja Chung was invited to be a discussant of the panel "Representing Women and the Memory of Imperial Rule" at the First Congress of the Asian Association of World Historians at Osaka University in May.

She presented her paper "Korean Woman as a 'Mother,' 'Wife,' and 'Love': Symbolic Representation of Gender in the Colonial Context" as a response to the paper titled "War, Gender, and Popular Songs - Focusing on the Militarist Songs under the Total War Regime of the 1940s" delivered by Aekyung Park of Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea.

Chung pointed out the gap between the notions of "a citizen of the empire" and "colonial subject" and also discussed the roles of gender and class hierarchy. She concluded her presentation by suggesting different perceptions of the militarist songs among the male intellectuals, soldiers and general public.

Chung is currently conducting research as a long-term postdoctoral fellow of Social Science Research Council and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science at the University of Tokyo.
