Assistant Professor of Anthropology Haeng-ja Chung presented two papers at the Annual AsiaNetwork Conference in March at Trinity University in Texas. In "How to Introduce Controversial Issues in the Classroom: Case Study of a 'Sex Work and Emotional Labor' Course," Chung argued that dialectic Socratic Method would be effective for covering controversial issues in a classroom.
Based upon her teaching experience at Hamilton and Colorado College, Chung confirmed that the dialectic teaching method encourages students to engage in critical thinking and reflexivity. She also presented the paper "Koreans in Japan and Mizushóbai." Chung discussed how the Mizushóbai industries had been offering the employment opportunity and career development for the disfranchised populations in Japan, contributed to the Japanese economy (1 percent of GNP), and challenged the simplistic stigmatized view against the industries.
