Assistant Professor of Russian Jason Cieply’s forthcoming book, Voicing Soviet Enthusiasm: Revolutionary Feeling and the Politics of Interclass Imitation, has been selected to receive a subvention through the Fall 2026 Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies First Book Subvention Program. (A subvention is a grant of financial aid, a subsidy, or monetary support given by a government or organization to support an institution, project, or undertaking.)
Twice a year, the ASEEES First-Book Subvention Program selects two to three books by first-time authors who have already secured publishing contracts to receive a subvention to support the books’ publication. A multidisciplinary committee of senior scholars evaluates applications; the committee also includes a publishing professional as a non-voting member who advises on budgetary matters.
In deciding how to allocate these funds, the committee takes into account both the scholarly significance of the book and the demonstrated need for subvention support. Voicing Soviet Enthusiasms will be released by the University of Wisconsin Press in Fall 2027.
