The Hamilton College Performing Arts Series continues its Classical Connections Series with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and guest pianist Jon Nakamatsu on Friday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m. in Wellin Hall on the campus of Hamilton College.  The RPO will perform under the baton of conductor Christopher Seaman.

Scheduled pieces for the Hamilton College concert are: Hector Berlioz, Le Corsaire Overture, Frédéric Chopin, Concerto No. 2 in F minor for Piano and Orchestra, Jon Nakamatsu piano; and Ralph Vaughan Williams, A London Symphony (Symphony No. 2).

2003-2004 marks music director Christopher Seaman's sixth season with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. This internationally renowned British conductor has become an integral part of the RPO and the greater Rochester community, and is recognized as having raised the artistic level of the Orchestra to its present excellence.

Recognized worldwide as one of today's leading conductors, he recently completed a highly successful tenure as conductor-in-residence at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, where he had worked with former RPO music director David Zinman since 1987. Other tenures have included principal conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony and of the Northern Sinfonia.

A native of California, Jon Nakamatsu claimed a distinguished place on the international musical scene in June, 199,7 when named the Gold Medalist of the Tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, the only American to have achieved this distinction since 1981. A former high school German teacher, he became a popular hero overnight in the highly traditional medium of classical music.

Highlights of Jon Nakamatsu's current season include return engagements with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Annapolis, Baton Rouge and Pacific Symphony Orchestras as well as performances with the orchestras of Brevard, Marin, Peninsula, Rogue Valley and West Virginia and the Masterworks Chorale at San Mateo. In recital, he is heard in Bellevue (WA), Bozeman, Columbus (GA), Corrales (NM), Fort Worth, Fort Myers, Knoxville and San Jose as well as Milan, Italy, while chamber music activities include performances with the Ives Quartet. Summer 2004 includes Mr. Nakamatsu's returns to Connecticut's famed "Summer Music at Harkness" festival and Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival for another performance with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.

Since being founded by George Eastman in 1922, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra has maintained a standard of artistic excellence demonstrated by extensive touring, performances at Carnegie Hall and recording projects. As one of the great American orchestras, the RPO's mission is to perform and present a broad range of quality music; attract, entertain and educate audiences with superior musical performances; maintain and build the Orchestra's national reputation; and enhance the reputation of the Rochester community as a place in which to live, work, play, visit and learn.

Today, music director Christopher Seaman continues the traditions of such notable music directors as Eugene Goossens, Jose Iturbi, Erich Leinsdorf, and David Zinman. The RPO has also performed under the batons of such renowned guest conductors as Fritz Reiner, Leonard Bernstein, Sir Thomas Beecham and Leopold Stokowski.
