Visiting Assistant Professor of History Rebecca Wall recently participated as an invited panelist at a conference held in Saint-Louis, Senegal. Wall, who attended virtually, discussed environmental changes near the estuary of the Senegal river following dam construction in the 1980s.
The conference, sponsored by the Institut d'Études Avancées de Saint-Louis du Sénégal, looked at fishing communities located near the mouth of the Senegal River. Wall's contribution provided ecological and political contextualization of the wider environmental shifts affecting urban fishing communities in the region. This talk expanded on Wall's doctoral research as well as her emerging interest in the environmental impacts of rice monoculture in the lower-Senegal Basin.
