Keeping campus safe this semester required faculty members to adjust not only how they teach, but often the design of their classrooms. In Professor of Geosciences Barb Tewksbury’s Geosc380 course (GIS for Geoscientists), eight of the students are on campus and three join in remotely.

“In this photo, you can see they are all looking at their computers and some are gesturing,” Tewksbury explains. “That’s because they are on Zoom and are paired for discussion in Zoom breakout rooms so that the students off campus have an experience that’s similar to those on campus. Because the numbers are not equal, some students are actually conversing over Zoom with someone on the other side of the classroom. You can see that all of them have earbuds or headsets.”
