Assistant Professor of English Dana Luciano organized a panel for a special session focusing on Melville's novella, "Benito Cereno." It was held on Dec 30 at the Modern Language Association's annual convention in New Orleans, titled "Benito Cereno and the Problem of Interpretation." Luciano's paper was titled "Benito Cereno and the End(s) of Race."

Luciano also served as respondent for a panel at the Future of Minority Studies conference at Stanford University, October 19-20, 2001.
