Olivier Wecxsteen was born in the northern region of France and began his ballet studies at the Conservatoire de Tourcoing at the age of eight.

After his participation in the Prix de Lausanne Competition at the age of fifteen, he was awarded a scholarship by the La Fondation de la Danse enabling him to study with Marika Besobrasova at the Academic de Danse Princesse Grace in Monte Carlo.

At the age of nineteen, he was invited to join Les Ballets de Monte Carlo by the company's artistic director, Jean-Yves Esquerre, in 1987. He quickly rose to the rank of principal dancer. Very soon his exceptional physique, his innate sense of partnering and his artistic qualities led him to be promoted quickly from corps de ballet to soloist roles and then to principal roles.

Wecxsteen roles included Prince Siegfried in Act II of Ben Stevenson's production of Swan Lake, the Baron in Leonide Massine's Gaite Parisienne, the Italian Cavalier in Antony Tudor's Gala Performance, James in Pierre Lacotte's production of La Sylphide, and principal roles in William Forsythe's In The Middle Somewhat Elevated, Jiri Kylian's Transfigured Night, John Neumeier's Mahler's Tenth Symphony, Tudor's The Leaves Are Fading, Roland Petit's Mozart et la Danse, and George Balanchine's Concerto Barocco and Stravinsky Violin Concerto.

In August 1993, Wecxsteen joined the Boston Ballet as a soloist and in 1994, he was appointed a principal dancer. He continued to expand his repertoire to include the roles of Prince Siegfried in Konstantin Sergeyev's production of Swan Lake, the Prince in The Nutcracker, Albrecht in Giselle, Conrad in Le Corsaire, the title role in John Cranko's Eugene Onegin, Lucentio in Cranko's The Taming of the Shrew, and principal roles in Paquita, Balanchine's Serenade and Who Cares?. He also created a principal role in Lila York's Celts.

In 1998 Wecxsteen joined Les Grands Ballets Canadiens as a principal dancer. Wecxsteen expanded his repertoire to include the role of Franz in Enrique Martinez's production of Coppelia, Hermann in Kim Brandstrup's Queen of Spades, and a principal role in Jiri Kylian's Stepping Stones.

In 2002 Wecxsteen left Les Grands Ballets Canadiens to pursue a career as a freelance guest artist.

Wecxsteen has also partnered international guest artist Marie-Christine Mouis in guest appearances in the United States including An Evening of Ballet Stars at the Detroit Music Hall in November 1994. In April 1996 Wecxsteen participated in the Diamonds of World Ballet gala at the Kremlin Place in Moscow. Wecxsteen has also been a frequent guest artist with the Charleston Ballet.
