Visiting Instructor of Art Sylvia de Swaan has been appointed to the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Artists' Fellowship Advisory Committee in the category of photography. NYFA gives more support to artists and arts organizations in all disciplines than any other private organization in the country. According to its Web site, "For more than three decades, NYFA has nurtured the people and environment that make art happen by providing the time and resources for the creative mind and the artistic spirit to flourish. NYFA helps artists move from the moment of inspiration to the completed work of art."

The Artists' Advisory Committee, appointed by NYFA's Board of Trustees, is an ethnically and geographically diverse group of professional New York State artists who represent all the disciplines in which fellowships are awarded. The Artists' Advisory Committee determines policy and procedures for Artists' Fellowships.

De Swaan was awarded a NYFA fellowship in photography in 2006. She was one of 117 New York artists to receive a NYFA grant that year. More than 4,400 artists applied for the 2006 NYFA fellowships in the following disciplines: architecture/environmental structures, choreography, fiction, music composition, painting, photography, playwriting/screenwriting and video. Eighteen photographers were among the year's fellowship recipients.
