The recent work of Sylvia de Swaan, lecturer in art, will be exhibited in a one-person show titled "Subversion" at the Center for Exploratory Perceptual Arts (CEPA) Gallery located at 617 Main St. in Buffalo, from Feb. 4 through March 19. De Swaan's work is the culmination of her participation in a six-week regional artist-in-residency program granted to her last year by CEPA and funded by CEPA and Hamilton College.

"'Sub-version' is a series of photos begun in response to 9/11," explains de Swaan. "To conjoin the bland reality out my window with the scenes of terror emanating from my television, I combine documentary with staged photos that incorporate images from the media. My purpose is to explore our changing social panorama and how world events increasingly enter our domestic sphere. 'Sub-version' is about pop culture, the media, violence, surveillance, shadowy threats and ominous rumors."

An opening reception for the exhibition will be held on Friday, Feb. 4, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the gallery.

De Swaan's work is also included in a three-person exhibition in New Orleans at The Bergeron Gallery titled "Visions of Sister Gertrude Morgan." This show will close on Feb. 26.
