Professor of Geology Eugene Domack presented his research on the Antarctic Larsen B ice shelf at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco and was quoted in Associated Press and <EM>Knight Ridder articles.

A huge Antarctic ice shelf that disintegrated in February had been there for at least 9,000 years, scientists reported Friday....the discovery is the latest evidence that much of the ice surrounding Antarctica is falling apart because of climate change, scientists say.

New research shows that the Larsen B ice shelf survived intact as a nearby shelf melted and refroze over thousands of years, said geologist Eugene Domack. "For some reason, this [Larsen B] system has been much more stable," he said at a meeting in San Francisco of the American Geophysical Union....Last December, just before Larsen B collapsed, Dr. Domack and colleagues took a scientific cruise along what was then the edge of the ice shelf. Cores drilled from the bottom of the ocean revealed the geologic history of the area.

Cores from beneath Larsen A were full of marine fossils and other evidence that an open ocean had existed there since the end of the last ice age. But cores from beneath Larsen B showed no signs that it had been anything but ice for the past 9,000 years, said Dr. Domack, of Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y.
