At the annual meeting of the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR), Associate Dean of the Faculty and Associate Professor of Chemistry Tim Elgren was elected to serve as the organization's president  for a one-year term beginning in June 2004.  With this election, Elgren will serve on the CUR executive committee for a three-year term as president-elect, president and recent past-president.  The CUR national office in Washington reports directly to the president. Elgren has been a member of CUR since taking his first faculty appointment and has been elected to serve as a CUR chemistry councilor for three consecutive three-year terms.

CUR is a national society dedicated to the advancement of research, scholarship and creative activity by undergraduates in collaboration with faculty at predominantly undergraduate institutions.  Although CUR is primarily a volunteer, grassroots organization with 3000 individual members, including both faculty and administrators, it also has 870 institutional members.  CUR is comprised of eight disciplinary divisions governed by Councilors elected by the membership.  CUR publishes a quarterly magazine and several "How to" booklets; it also holds an annual business meeting, a biennial national conference, a biennial "April Dialogue" in Washington, D.C. and several smaller institutes and workshops.  CUR participates in science policy matters and publishes white papers on issues of interest to the membership of CUR and in support of CUR's mission.
