Professor of Chemistry Tim Elgren served as a facilitator at the Midwest Regional Workshop on Institutionalizing Undergraduate Research held at Hope College October 10-12. The workshop was funded by the National Science Foundation and coordinated by the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR). Eight institutional teams, consisting of faculty members and administrators, worked with facilitators to develop action plans for implementing sustainable undergraduate research programs on their campuses.
Elgren is the former president of CUR and recently co-edited Developing and Sustaining a Research-Supportive Curriculum: A Compendium of Successful Practices. Many Hamilton initiatives were featured in the workshop, including the process leading up to the building of the new Science Center, the STEP program that brought admitted students to campus for five-week summer research experiences before they matriculated, and the integrated research methods course in chemistry (dubbed "Superlab").
