The Chronicle of Higher Education in its Teaching Newsletter featured Hamilton’s math department in an article titled “Welcoming Students to Your Discipline - A Culture of Collaboration.”  Highlighting the renovation of the Christian Johnson Building to accommodate a large study area surrounded by faculty offices, the story reminded readers that “the arrangement of physical space has implications for teaching and learning.”

“The upshot of all of this,” according to Richard Bedient, the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Mathematics, “is that students get to see how math is really done.” Assistant Professor of Math Courtney Gibbons added, “It's a lot easier to see yourself as a math major if you can actually see someone a lot like you who is planning to be (or already is) a math major.”
