Following the screening of Strong Island to a full house as part of his F.I.L.M. series, Professor of Art History Scott MacDonald had the opportunity to interview the film’s director and alumnus Yance Ford ’94. The resulting article was published in the most recent issue of Cineaste, a leading magazine on the art and politics of the cinema, in its winter 2017 issue.
Titled “In His Face: An Interview with Yance Ford on Strong Island,” the conversation addressed Ford’s years at Hamilton and his work at PBS’s POV and how both experiences informed his work on Strong Island; his awareness of his true self and transition from female to male; his thought processes in creating his work; and the people who helped him along the way.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently announced 15 films in the Documentary Feature category, of which Strong Island is one, that will advance in the voting process for the 90th Academy Awards. Ford is also the focus of a feature article in the most recent issue of Hamilton’s Alumni Review magazine.
