In recognition of Disability Awareness Month, Hamilton College will host a film screening of Darius Goes West on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Kirner-Johnson Auditorium. Darius Goes West is a documentary about Darius Weems, a teenager with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, who, because of his disease, had never left his hometown of Athens, Georgia. However, during the summer of 2005, 15-year-old Darius began a road trip across the United States with the help of 11 friends. The goal of the trip was to reach Los Angeles in hopes of appearing on MTV’s program, “Pimp My Ride,” where Darius could customize his wheelchair on the hit show. During the course of the trip, they tested wheelchair-accessibility in America and chronicled the trials of facing disability in our nation.

The film won 24 awards in 2007, including the Audience Award for Best Feature at the AFI Dallas International Film Festival, the Atlanta Film Festival, the Boston Independent Film Festival, and the Oxford Film Festival.
