The Hamilton College Department of Music continues the tradition of starting the year with a free Fall Jazz Kick-Off concert on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 9 p.m. in the Fillius Events Barn.
The evening will feature the premiere of "Groove Boutique" a suite of modern jazz for quintet in eight movements written by Hamilton College's own "Doctuh" Mike Woods. Performing "Groove Boutique" are a number of the area's leading jazz musicians. The quintet includes Woods on bass, Jakubu Griffin on drums, Ken Lee Grand on saxophone and woodwinds, Bruce Barth on piano, and Jeff Stockham on trumpet and French horn.
By writing and performing "Groove Boutique," Woods says he wants to lead the audience through a complete jazz experience. His goal was to create new, expressive and exciting music for the times. The entire suite is eight movements long, and each movement has a title that is a double entendre.
This concert is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, call the performing arts box office at 859-4331.
