The Charlean and Wayland Blood Fitness and Dance Center has received four design and construction awards since its dedication in 2006. The building was awarded the Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) - New York Council Award of Excellence earlier in the year. It was one of only three athletic buildings included in The Chronicle of Higher Education "Campus Architecture" special section in February. In September, it was recognized with the New York Construction's Best of New York 2007 "Best Sports Facility" and also the "Award of Merit" in the restoration category.
Formerly the Saunders Hall of Chemistry, the building was renovated and expanded in 2005 and 2006. Butler Rogers Baskett and Barr and Barr Inc. were the architectural and construction firms respectively. Made possible through the generous gifts of David Blood, the center houses a dance studio, room for aerobic/cardio training, space for resistance and weight-training, a multipurpose exercise room, a juice bar and a three-story climbing wall.
The state-of-the-art facility tripled the space available for fitness activities on a campus where approximately 75 percent of the student body -- and many members of the faculty and staff -- work out regularly.
