Thanks to a weekend snowfall, Hamilton's 8th annual FebFest is underway with activities continuing on campus through Saturday, Feb. 16. This year's theme is Duel 2008, which recalls Alexander Hamilton's fateful duel with Aaron Burr. Al Ham the Pig and FebFest mascot Wally the Snowman will duke it out on behalf of Hamilton and Burr, and students can choose sides by purchasing a t-shirt depicting their favorite.
Events will include the 15th annual Chili Cook-off, snoccer tournament, a sledding race, a snow sculpture contest and chocolate tasting. Those wishing to attend should purchase FebFest buttons ($5) which provide entry into events for free or at reduced cost.
Hamilton's first winter carnival was held in 1938, with events such as a hockey game, dance parties, crowning of the carnival queen and a figure skating exhibition by James and Grace Madden of the U.S. Olympic Team. The tradition continued with similar events until the mid-'50s, when it lost popularity. The winter carnival returned to the Hill in 2000 through the efforts of students and Student Activities staff. FebFest aims to liven up the Hill and provide the community a distraction from the cold, snow and work.
Other activities that are planned for FebFest 2008 include Trivia Night, a lecture by alumnus Paul Lieberstein of NBC's The Office, Valentine making, Senior Karaoke Pub Night and, on Friday, Feb. 15, fireworks on Royce baseball field.
