Hamilton College Sociology Professor Dennis Gilbert, who conducted a Muslim America Poll this spring says "American Muslims are one of our most successful immigrant groups.  Until 9-11, they were almost invisible to other Americans.  Now that they've gotten a lot of unwanted attention, I expect them to become much more active
politically."

The Hamilton College Muslim America Poll found that nearly 75 percent of Muslim Americans either know someone who has or have themselves experienced an act of anti-Muslim discrimination, harassment, verbal abuse or physical attack since September 11.  The Hamilton College- Zogby International poll, shows that almost two out of three Muslims believe that the FBI questioning and arrests of Muslims in the U.S. after Sept. 11 are unwarranted abuses of civil liberties.  The poll of 521 Muslims living in America was developed by Hamilton College and administered by Zogby International.

Professor Gilbert is available for media interviews. He can be reached directly in his office at 315-859-4140, or through Sharon Rippey, Hamilton College Media Relations, 315-859-4068.
