Hamilton College Director of Athletics, Thomas E. Murphy, has announced that Mike Gilbert has been hired as the head coach of the men's and women's crew teams. Gilbert takes over for Joe Bilyea who left after three years to become the assistant coach of the women's crew team at the University of Tennessee. "We are very pleased to have Mike join our staff," said Murphy. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our department and is a welcome addition to our staff."

In addition to serving as the rowing and sculling coach the past three years at Community Rowing Inc. in Boston, Michael also coached women's crew at The Winsor School and was men's head crew coach at The University of Vermont, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1992 and was a member of the varsity crew team. As a coach, Michael's teams have competed with great success at the USRowing Nationals (Women's S8+ finished first in 2001), USRowing Masters Nationals (Women's A4X, B8+ were second in 2000), Head of the Charles (Women's Club Eight was second in 1999 and 2000) and other national and New England competitions.

In addition to coaching crew, Michael has served as a fitness center director and alpine ski coach. His certifications include USRowing Level II, USSCA Level IV (National) Alpine Ski Coach, and NCSA-CSCS Strength and Conditioning Specialist and NSCA-CPT Certified Personal Trainer.
