Barbara Gold, the Edward North Professor of Classics, gave a plenary address at the biennial Celtic Conference in Classics held June 25-28 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Her address was titled “Simone Weil: Receiving the Iliad.”
The paper was originally part of a panel on “Forms of Violence, Forms of Hierarchy” before it was chosen to be a plenary. The panel was co-organized by Nancy Sorkin Rabinowitz, professor of comparative literature, who also presented a roundtable discussion on “Hierarchies of Violence Ancient and Modern: What can we do? Why do we bother?” at the conference.
