Hamilton senior Haley Reimbold (Roosevelt, N.J.) has received another honor in recognition of her leadership in volunteer work. Reimbold has been awarded a $25,000 Target All-Around Scholarship. It recognizes her outstanding commitment to volunteerism and her efforts reaching out to students using community service activities as a way to help them improve their own situations while giving back to the community. Reimbold was selected as the winner from a nationwide pool of nearly 12,000 applicants. In 2004 she received the $50,000 Russ Berrie Award for Making a Difference in New Jersey.
Supporting an extensive roster of community service activities, Reimbold's volunteer projects range from starting 'Make a Difference Day' at Hamilton College, designed to help jump start service involvement by faculty members and students, to weekly volunteer work at Lincoln Academy, an alternative-education high school in Utica, N.Y., helping students with their science and math skills. Some of Reimbold's other volunteer projects include raising awareness of local and global hunger and homelessness, Red Cross training, and assistance to programs such as America's Greatest Heart Run/Walk, AIDS Hike for Life, and Amnesty International.
"Target takes volunteerism to heart through our nationwide network of team member volunteers who donate hundreds-of-thousands of hours to local community projects each year," said Laysha Ward, vice president, community relations, Target. "We established the Target All-Around Scholarship program to recognize students who share our commitment to volunteerism, and Haley's impressive list of volunteer projects and her desire to create change on a local, community level makes her a very deserving recipient."
At Hamilton Reimbold has served as director of HAVOC (Hamilton Action Volunteer Outreach Coalition); she was among organizers of the January, 2004, Martin Luther King Service Day and Make a Difference Day; has participated in Alternative Spring Break; and worked on campus blood drives.
Now in its ninth year the Target All-Around Scholarship program rewards college-bound students or undergraduate college students under age 24 who have demonstrated an extensive commitment to volunteerism and community service. Target All-Around Scholarship applications are reviewed by a committee from Scholarship America, Inc., a scholarship management firm in St. Peter, Minn. Applicants are evaluated based on the following criteria: length of time and hours of community or volunteer service; volunteer leadership awards and honors; an essay written by the student on volunteer service; an appraisal by their volunteer supervisor or leader; and a grade point average of at least 2.0. The scholarship deadline is November 1 each year.
