The HCAYS program visits the Plaza del Obradoiro at Santiago de Compostela.

Professor of Hispanic Studeis Joana Sabadell-Nieto, who is serving as director-in-residence for the Hamilton College Academic Year in Spain, offered this glimpse into the group's first week.

Our HCAYS started with a trip through Galicia in the Northwestern coast of Spain. The group walked the last six kilometers to Santiago de Compostela, like any pilgrim would do. Ok, real pilgrims will walk hundreds more, but we did our bit. From the Middle Ages, Santiago is and has been the goal of both religious and non-religious walkers.

For us, it was the start of our trip to 500-year old palaces, wineries, Celtic sites, fishing and industrial sea ports and protected natural marine parks and islands. We all learned a lot, we got to know each other and got ready for our first week of classes in Madrid.

Help us provide an accessible education, offer innovative resources and programs, and foster intellectual exploration.
