In support of the final day of Run for the Fallen, members of the Hamilton College and Mohawk Valley communities are invited to participate in a one-mile walk/run beginning at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24, on the Hamilton campus.

Run for the Fallen is a cross-country relay organized by Hamilton alumnus Jon Bellona '03 and several other Hamiltonians to remember their  classmate Michael Cleary '03 and all other service men and women who have died in Iraq. The group started in California on June 14 and will conclude in Arlington Nation Cemetery on August 24, having run more than 4,000 miles while planting a flag and personalized placard at each mile marker in honor of an individual fallen service member.

Those interested in participating in the run/walk should arrive at the front of the Hamilton Admission office on Campus Road before 8 a.m. on Sunday, Aug 24. The run/walk will finish at the Charlean and Wayland Blood Fitness and Dance Center  where refreshments will be served.

For information about this event, contact Emma Woods at emwoods@hamilton.edu or Liz Bowman at elbowma@hamilton.edu at 315-859-4004. For more information on the national run in Washington D.C., click on www.runforthefallen.org and go to "Final Day Event."

Groups throughout New York and across the country will be running on Aug. 24, and a national mileage total in honor of all fallen service members will be maintained at www.runforthefallen.org. At this time, remembrance runs have been scheduled in 33 states and two countries. Runners have pledged more than 3,300 miles.

Jeannie Olney of Rome, New York, is organizing a run/walk to honor Oneida County service members at Griffiths Air Base at 9 a.m. at the B-52 on Perimeter Rd. Additional run/walks are being organized by Hamilton alumni in New York City, Philadelphia, Denver and Washington D.C. For additional information contact Liz Bowman at elbowma@hamilton.edu.

The final day of Run for the Fallen is being held in honor of those fallen in both Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and Operation Iraqi Freedom. There will be a private ceremony in Arlington National Cemetery with a small group of the national runners on Aug. 24.

The Run for the Fallen is not about pace, and it is not about politics. Each mile is run in remembrance of those who have fallen. All runners are asked to honor and maintain the apolitical nature of this run.
