Hamilton College Begins 186th Academic Year

Hamilton College President Eugene M. Tobin will welcome 470 new students, including 455 freshmen, on Sunday, Aug. 31, at a Convocation formally opening the 186th academic year.

His address is titled, "Nurturing Our Democratic Dispositions."

The assembly, which includes the presentation of academic awards, begins at 7:30 p.m. in Wellin Hall of the Schambach Center for Music and Performing Arts. It is open to the public.

Members of the first-year class were drawn from a record number of applications, 4,107. Only 42% of the applicants for the Class of 2001 were offered admission to the college, and for the first time in school history, there are more women than men in the class. Hamilton was an all-male college until joining with all-female Kirkland College in 1978.

In addition, the class includes 15 high school valedictorians, seven salutatorians and 10 students who are national merit finalists. Multicultural students comprise 10% of the class, an increase of two percentage points from the previous two classes. An additional 3% of the class hails from countries outside the United States.
