Hamilton sent two curling teams to the 2008 National College Curling Tournament at the North Shore and Chicago Curling Clubs in Glenview, Ill., from March 14-16. Returning curlers Katherine Alser '09, Yuqi Mao '09, Tom Irvin '09 and Dave Hamilton '09 comprised Team Hamilton Blue, and competed in Division 3. New curlers Jack Li '08, Andrew Harris '11 and Will Welles '08 teamed up with Mike Lindsay of Yale University, to form Team Hamilton Buff, and competed in Division 4. For the second straight year Hamilton returned successful with both teams bringing home the gold medals from their respective divisions.
Team Blue got off to a fast start and kept on rolling. After convincingly defeating Bowling Green State B on Friday evening, they won a 6-4 nailbiter over the very good Denver University A on Saturday morning. Later that day Blue scored a win over Lawrence Technical B in convincing fashion to take a 3-0 record into the Sunday final. They put their perfect 3-0 record on the line against Lawrence Technical A, where they won 10-3, finishing 4-0 and taking home the Division 3 gold. It was the second gold in as many years for back-to-back champs Alser, Mao, Irvin and Hamilton, as they also won Division 5 of the 2007 tournament.
Team Buff lost their first match to Marquette Gold on Friday, but recovered in a big way to sweep three Saturday matches against Colorado School of Mines, the University of Nebraska and Michigan Tech. Their 3-1 record in pool play was good enough to earn entry into the Sunday final after a gutsy win over a very strong Nebraska team. They then defeated Lawrence Technical C, thus winning the gold medal in Division 4.
The tournament was the end of a very successful season for the Hamilton curling team, which included a bronze medal for Team Blue at the East Regional at Broomstones Curling Club in Wayland, Mass. The regional, unlike nationals, was held in an open format with no divisions.
The Hamilton College Curling Team was formed in 2007, and practices at the Utica Curling Club in Whitesboro from October to March. They are always looking for new curlers regardless of experience, or even knowledge of the game. For more information, contact dhamilto@hamilton.edu.
