Hamilton College is mourning the death of former president Harry C. Payne, who died unexpectedly on Monday in Atlanta. In announcing the death to the campus community, President Joan Hinde Stewart said, "On behalf of Hamilton, I extend our deepest sympathy to Hank's wife Deborah and the Payne family."

Hank Payne served as Hamilton's 17th president from 1988 to 1993. He served subsequently as president of Williams College from 1994 to 1999 and as president of the Woodward Academy in College Park, Ga., a position he held for the past seven years. Payne earned his bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees from Yale University. He taught at Colgate University and was provost at Haverford College before coming to Hamilton.
