Thirteen Hamilton seniors on campus and two students in Hamilton's program in Beijing recently took the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI test) for Chinese language proficiency. ACTFL language tests determine a candidate's ability to use the language effectively and appropriately in real-life situations.
The ACTFL OPI is a standardized procedure for the global assessment of functional speaking ability. It is a face-to-face or telephonic interview between a certified ACTFL tester and an examinee that determines how well a person speaks a language by comparing his or her performance of specific communication tasks with the criteria for each of 10 proficiency levels. Many Chinese language department students have already achieved advanced proficiency test scores on the OPI exam last year.

ACTFL assessments indicate what a person can do with the language, detailing the level at which they can sustain successful communication in all forms, and the clear upper limits of their ability. In a business context, ACTFL assessments are appropriate for employment selection, placement into training programs, demonstration of linguistic progress, and evidence of training effectiveness.
