Hamilton College Trivia
Hamilton College Trivia
On November 2, 2009, the Boston Alumni Association co-hosted a trivia night with their counterparts from Colgate University at the Bell in Hand Tavern located in downtown Boston. Nearly 100 alumni from both schools attended, all of whom were anxious for a chance at trivia glory. It was a matchup of mental prowess and superior grasp of extraneous knowledge, not to mention bragging rights for the college that emerged victorious!

Hosting the event for the Hamilton side was Assistant Director of Alumni Relations and Clinton’s own trivia czar, Paul Ryan ’02.  Having frequented past trivia nights on campus at the Little Pub, our team, consisting of Ryan Morris ’08, Tim Seifert ’08, Sam Gitlitz ’08 and yours truly, was thrilled to have a chance to revive our old name, Lord Beer Me Strength.  In total, there were twelve teams from Hamilton and six from Colgate, but of course only one team and one school, would be crowned the victor.

Throughout the evening the alumni organizations graciously ordered appetizers for everyone, all of which were consumed in short order.  Although the third round of nachos was excellent, the third quarter of trivia was disappointing for our team as we missed a tough geography question.  Finishing that quarter, the Continental groups lagged behind the rival Raider squads.

This teed up a nail-biter of a fourth quarter. Although we regained points with some key answers, it was not enough to catch the leading Colgate team.  So it came down to the final round. With only two questions remaining and our team down by two points, we knew we must bet big if we dared dream of glory in the name of the “Buff and Blue”.

Anxiously we waited as Paul read the final question, “The address 1060 West Addison Street, Chicago Illinois is this place in reality and this place in fiction”.  We looked at each other confused, not entirely sure what to make of the question.  Pondering for a few moments, we stared blankly at the bar. Then all at once, like the Martin's Way Cat leaping out from below the Dark Side Bridge, the answer jumped out at us.  The address 1060 West Addison Street, Chicago Illinois is the actual address of Wrigley Field and the fake abode of one Elwood Blues in the classic movie comedy The Blues Brothers!

Flush with the chance of victory, our team quietly began to wonder if our points would hold up against the leading Colgate squad.  Could it be true?  Was it enough for Hamilton to take the victory?

With that, the finals scores were announced.  Colgate’s highest scoring team: 103; Lord Beer Me Strength: 104.  We won!  Hamilton beat Colgate!

As a prize for winning our team received official Hamilton vs. Colgate trivia challenge commemorative t-shirts, but nothing compared to the pride we felt as Hamilton alumni representing the Continentals in claiming victory over our rivals.

It truly was a wonderful night. I encourage all alumni to get involved in local Hamilton events in your area. It's great to catch up with old classmates, keep those Hamilton bonds strong, and if the occasion calls, even show those folks from Colgate who's boss!
