Hamilton College's Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center presents, "In Defense of Globalization," on Wednesday, March 1, at 7:30 p.m. as part of its year-long lecture series, "The Responsibilities of a Superpower." Jagdish Bhagwati, Senior Fellow in International Economics at the Maurice R. Greenberg Center for Geoeconomic Studies and Professor of International Economics at Columbia University, is the evening's speaker. The event will be held in the Hamilton Chapel and is free and open to the public.

Bhagwati has served as Economic Policy Advisor to Director-General, General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT, 1991-1993) and as a Special Adviser to the UN on Globalization (2000) and as an External Adviser to the World Trade Organization (2001). He is a member of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's Advisory Group on the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) process in Africa and is a Senior Fellow for International Economics at the Council on Foreign Relations. He graduated from Cambridge University in 1956 and then studied at MIT and Oxford. He has published many books including, The World Trading System at Risk (1991), The Wind of the Hundred Days: How Washington Mismanaged Globalization (2001), Free Trade Today (2002) and In Defense of Globalization (2004). Bhagwati also frequently writes for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Financial Times. Currently he is writing a book on the challenges of illegal immigration.
