The Feb. 11 issue of Publishers Weekly announced that Maurice Isserman, James L. Ferguson Professor of History, has sold a new book titled Climbing the American Mountain to W.W. Norton & Company, an independent publisher. According to the publication, "the book will cover the history of mountaineering in America and Americans in mountaineering, from Darby Field's 1642 ascent of Mount Washington in search of diamonds to Ed Viesturs's 2006 climb of Annapurna in Nepal. Recounting history-making expeditions in and outside the U.S., Isserman will explore how mountains and mountain climbing have helped shape our national experience, self-image and ideals."
Isserman has completed a book on the history of Himalayan mountaineering titled Fallen Giants: The History of Himalayan Mountaineering from the Age of Empire to the Age of Extremes, with co-author Stewart Weaver, that is scheduled to be published by Yale University Press in the summer of 2008. Material from the book has already appeared in The Chronicle of Higher Education, American Heritage, The Christian Science Monitor, and Alpinist magazine.
