Jazmine Coleman '09 has been selected as a delegate to the 2009 FACES "On Common Ground" Conference. FACES (Forum for American/Chinese Exchange at Stanford) was founded in 2001 by a Stanford University student who was studying in Beijing and was struck by conflicting stories in American and Chinese media. FACES was established on the idea that in order for the U.S. and China to be a force for peace and prosperity, both countries must learn to trust and understand each other.

The "On Common Ground Conference" began in 2003 and has since expanded to include a second yearly conference in Beijing. Since its inception, seven conferences have taken place with representatives from 45 American and Chinese colleges.

Coleman, who is majoring in Chinese and philosophy at Hamilton, was chosen as one of 40 delegates from almost 600 applicants from around the world. She will attend a conference at Stanford from April 12-18 and another conference in China on Nov. 15-21.

"Attending 'On Common Ground' as an American delegate means so much to me. I really feel like FACES at Stanford has thought long and hard about how to shape the kinds of leaders required to maintain peaceful and productive relations between America and China. The possibility of being an asset to my country in the area of Sino- American relations fills me with pride," said Coleman. She is planning to take a year off to work and, hopefully, travel back to China to improve her language skills and cultural competency. She plans to enter law school in 2010. According to Coleman, opportunities to positively affect Sino-American relations will definitely impact her decision.
